That being said, there are definitely some instances of Sauron attempting to deceive during (or slightly prior to) the War of the Ring. Not much need to deceive your enemies when you already know that you can completely flatten them. I think that's probably a function of knowing that if no one brings the Ring to bear against him, then he's already won. There are other Tolkien-themed subreddits out there!
